American Dominance Coming To an End

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Danny Lee recently became the youngest winner in the history of the European Tour with a win in Australia at the Johnnie Walker Classic. Rory McIlroy won the Dubai Desert Classic with an all-world field last month at the ripe old age of 19. Ryo Ishikawa has won twice on the Japan Pro Golf Tour and is 17. In very short order, the faces of golf have gotten a lot younger and a lot less American. Naturally, the success of these astonishing talents has rendered a lot of fans and writers to begin to wonder if the days of American dominance are numbered. After all, the only American in the top 25 that is under the age of 30 is Anthony Kim. Despite his fantastic 2008, Kim has yet to produce early on in 2009. The days of American golfing dominance could be coming to an end.

The Glades (Gold Coast - Australia)

Friday, March 13th, 2009

The South East Queensland area of Australia is a tourist haven and is renowned for world-class golf courses. The Glades, Royal Pines, the Pines at Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island Resort immediately come to mind. The Glades is very much a risk/reward course. It rewards the more aggressive golfer (who pulls it off) with a better run to the hole. Although technically a resort course, the Greg Norman influence is apparent, especially around the greens with deep, steep faced bunkers (otherwise known as ‘pot’ bunkers). The bent grass greens are soft, responsive and putt true. The fairways are couch grass and there are the usual three tee off areas; black tees (championship), gold tees (mens) and platinum tees (ladies). The course manager recommends that the black tees be left to low single markers or professionals.

Club Rust Removal

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Is rust building up on your clubs? If so there are a couple of products out there which can help you get your clubs spic and clean once again. Some suggestions are two different products called Brasso or Flitz. Both can be bought at Lowes. Both will remove rust and not harm the finish. The use of electrical grade CRC silicone for protection on clubs is also a good idea. This is none petroleum based so it is safe on any finish. It leaves no residue and will not harm the finish. It is dry unlike oil, so nothing like sand or fertilizer will stick.

Golf & the Environment

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Do you think golf is an environmentally compatible sport? Would you be willing to play on brown grass during periods of low rain (to conserve water)? Golf course owners have an opportunity to reduce the amount of potable water they consume for their golf courses by accepting tertiary water from local municipalities (but shouldn’t have to pay for the pipe to deliver it).  Those who do are perceived as helping the community, especially in areas that experience frequent droughts, like Florida and Arizona. It’s truly a simple way to make a positive difference. This is just one example of how the world of golf can do its part.  Going back to courses with natural features and landscaping, accepting a less-than-emerald green golf course, and limiting the number of acres that need chemicals are all common sense.

Golf Stances Defined

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Closed Stance : A closed stance refers to a stance in which your body alignment is facing to the right of your intended target (This term is normally applied to right handed golfers).

Downhill Lie: A downhill lie refers to a stance in which your front foot is below your back foot when you are addressing the ball

Neutral Stance: This stance is one in which both feet are in line and parallel to the target line.

Open Stance: This stance in one in which your body alignment points towards the left of the target when set up (for right-handed golfers).

Reverse C: A finish position to the full swing where the hips are dramatically thrust out toward the target and the head is leaning back with the spine also arched backward (when a right-handed golfer gets into this position it resembles a mirror, or reversed, image of the letter C — thus the name).
